9 Safe and Exciting Destinations in Ghana for Solo Female Travelers
Embarking on a solo adventure is a thrilling experience, especially when the destination offers both safety and excitement. Many solo travelers, especially travelers visiting Ghana for the first time have one major concern which is, “Is Ghana safe for females traveling alone?” The answer is “Yes!” Ghana is ranked one of the safest countries to visit in Africa and is renowned for its warm hospitality, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes, making it an ideal destination for solo female travelers wanting to visit the country. After visiting all 16 regions of the country, these are my top 9 safest and must-visit destinations in Ghana that will leave you with unforgettable memories and experiences.
1. Accra: The Bustling Capital
As Accra is the Capital of Ghana, Kotoka International Airport will be your point of entry into the country. Accra is a lively capital city bursting with energy and culture. Despite being a bustling metropolis, Accra offers a welcoming atmosphere for solo female travelers. Explore the vibrant markets of Makola and Jamestown, visit historical sites like the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and the W.E.B. Du Bois Center. You can also visit the Ghana National Museum which offers in depth knowledge of the culture and history of Ghana. Accra City Tours are usually half day experiences depending on how many sites you decide to visit in a day. Of course there are also many cute restaurants and cafes you can visit and try out while in the city. Check out some of my favorite restaurants to try in Accra.
2. Cape Coast: History and Beaches
About 3 hours west away from Accra is the historic city of Cape Coast, which served as a major trading hub during the colonial era. Top attractions in this region include the Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle which are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These two sites are highly recommended especially for African Americans who are visiting Ghana to connect with their roots. The Kakum National Park is also one of my favorite places to visit. The Park is most famous for its canopy walkway with bridges suspended in the air giving a very breathtaking view of the forest. These 3 sites can be done as a Day trip to Cape Coast from Accra and can be done as a female solo traveler. It takes between 12 to 15 hours including the drive to the sites and the drive back to Accra. Other attractions you should check out if you are spending more than a day in this region will be the Stingless Bee Center, the Crocodile Pond at Hans Cottage and the Assin Manso Slave River. While in this region, you can take the opportunity to relax on the pristine beaches of Cape Coast and enjoy the serene coastal ambiance.
3. Kumasi: Cultural Heartland
Another one of my favorite places to visit as a female solo traveler is Kumasi, the cultural heartland of the Ashanti kingdom. It is about 5 hours drive from Accra but you can also catch a 45 minutes flight there if 5 hours of driving is a bit too much for you. As women play significant roles in the culture and tradition of the people of Ashanti, it is one of places to witness how highly women are honored. Top attractions you can visit include the vibrant Kejetia Market, one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa, and marvel at the craftsmanship of the local artisans in the cultural center of Bonwire, renowned for its Kente cloth production. Also visit the Manhyia Palace Museum to learn about the rich history of the Ashanti people and its monarchy, the Prempeh Jubilee Museum and the Okomfo Anokye Sword Site. There are also various unique cultural things to do in Kumasi if you will be spending a couple of days in this City.
4. Volta Region: Nature's Paradise
For female solo travelers who are nature lovers, the Volta Region offers various outdoor adventures amidst breathtaking landscapes. You can hike to the summit of Mount Afadja, the highest peak in Ghana, and be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding lush forests, xplore the tranquil beauty of Wli Waterfalls, the tallest waterfall in West Africa, and cruise along the serene waters of Lake Volta, the largest man-made lake in the world. If you are feeling a little bit adventurous and want to get a bit up close and personal with nature, you can visit the Tafi Monkey Sanctuary where you get to feed some mona monkeys and play with them. This site is one of the popular eco-friendly activities in Ghana where these monkeys and humans live harmoniously together in the same community. Remember to pack some bananas for your visit, as the monkeys at Tafi Atome Sanctuary are quite friendly – as long as you have bananas to share! Once your banana supply runs out, so does the monkey's interest in your friendship.
5. Ada Foah: Serenity by the Sea
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, you can unwind and relax in the serene oasis of Ada Foah. Located along the scenic Volta River estuary, Ada Foah offers pristine beaches, serene lagoons, and beautiful islands waiting to be explored. Indulge in water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding, or simply relax on the sandy shores and soak in the breathtaking views of the sunset over the horizon. You can also visit the Nyinkyin Museum and some of the many fishing communities in the area. There are many beautiful resorts and lodges to stay at in Ada Foah offering the perfect blend of tranquility, adventure, and relaxation.
6. Mole National Park: Wildlife Encounter
Mole National Park is one of the most popular safari adventures in Ghana. It is one of West Africa's largest wildlife reserves. You can spot elephants, antelopes, warthogs, and a variety of bird species as you explore the savannah landscape on guided game drives and walking safaris. I recommend staying overnight at the park's comfortable lodges and falling asleep to the sounds of the African wilderness. There are two main lodges at the park. The Zaina Lodge which is more of a high end Luxury accommodation located in the forest. Zaina lodge offers all inclusive packages which covers 3 meals a day and a safari tour for each day you stay at the lodge. The second option is Mole Motel which is more of a budget hostel also located on the park.

7. Axim: Hidden Gem of the West
Axim is a charming coastal town nestled along Ghana's western coast. This coastal town is mostly famous for its beautiful beaches and resorts for relaxation. Famous sites to explore include the historic Fort St. Antonio, built by the Portuguese, Fort Metal Cross and Fort Batenstein. Nzulenzu, the village built on water, is also one of the attractions in this area you shouldn’t miss out on. Stroll along the beaches lined with palm trees swaying in the ocean breeze. I recommend Axim to any female solo traveler who is looking for beautiful resorts to just relax and catch vibes.
8. Busua: Surfer's Paradise
For those seeking sun, sand, and surf, then Busua Beach should be number one on your list. It is a laid-back paradise on Ghana's western coast. You can spend your days riding the waves on a surfboard or simply lounging on the golden sands and soaking up the tropical sunshine. My favorite things to do in Busua include beach yoga sessions, indulging in fresh seafood delicacies, and soaking in the breathtaking beauty of the sunset.
9. Aburi: Botanical Paradise
Aburi, a town just about an hour away from Accra provides an escape from the urban hustle and bustle and retreat to the serenity of the mountains. Aburi Botanical Gardens, Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm and Adom Waterfalls are 3 of my things to do in Aburi in just a day. You can wander through lush greenery and vibrant floral displays as you explore the botanical garden which is home to a diverse collection of exotic plants and trees. The views from the surrounding hills and valleys are breathtaking and the fresh mountain air is just what you need when you get away from the city.
